Porcelain Fillings vs. Metal Fillings

Metal amalgam fillings have long been the standard for filling cavities and preventing further tooth decay. But porcelain fillings are becoming increasingly popular as dentists and patients alike learn more about the benefits of tooth-coloured porcelain fillings.

In fact, the rise of porcelain fillings has also accentuated the disadvantages of metal fillings, which include:

• Metal fillings are vulnerable to temperature changes, which can cause the metal to expand and contract and lead to the fillings loosening, falling out, or cracking teeth
• The mercury in metal fillings may pose health risks to adults predisposed to certain medical conditions
• Metal fillings don’t bond permanently with your teeth
• Metal fillings are visible and not aesthetically pleasing

Porcelain fillings, meanwhile, offer the following benefits:

• Porcelain fillings are not prone to adverse effects with changes in temperature
• Porcelain fillings are safe
• Porcelain fillings bonds with your teeth and provide better strength and protection
• Porcelain fillings resemble your natural teeth

Although they’re suitable for a wide variety of conditions, porcelain fillings do have limitations. Depending on the extent of your individual condition, other options such as tooth bonding or dental crowns may provide a more suitable treatment.

If you live in the Edmonton, Alberta, area and are interested in learning if porcelain fillings might be right for you, please contact Edmonton dentist Dr. Christine Fialka-Eshenko at Focus on Smiles to schedule a consultation.
